South of France | Languedoc
region

The region of Languedoc-Roussillon extends from the
border with Spain, along the Mediterranean to Nimes
and beyond. As well as an abundance of wild countryside
and mountains, it also has some of the best beaches
in Europe.
Most properties on the site are situated in this popular
part of the south of France, a region which offers such
a wide variety of countryside, from the mountains, rivers
and lakes to the coastline of the Mediterranean. The
area is so different from the rest of France, with a
wide range of cultures mixing together to enhance everyday
life, from food to festivals. Yes, a different part
of France. |

Pezenas,
not only famous for being the home, for a while, of the famous
Playwright Molière, is also a very beautiful medieval
market town and is an artists haven. There is an outstanding
array of historic buildings, with areas of XVI & XVII
century architecture.
The town also has numerous bars and restaurants; a variety
of clothing shops; art galleries and craft shops in the medieval
quarter (many buildings have been restored to their former
glory).
The Saturday market is a must. You’ll see flower stalls
giving a kaleidoscope of colours; seasonal vegetables in abundance
and many other stalls selling a variety of local produce to
tempt your taste buds. |

The city of Beziers
is well worth a visit. There is plenty to see, and
the city has an abundance of cafes, bars and restaurants.
Stroll down the main Allées Paul Riquet (statue photo
left) named after Beziers' famous engineer, responsible for
the construction of the Canal du Midi. During summer months
the bars and restaurants that line one side of the Allées
Paul Riquet spill into the boulevard. The allée is
also full with the traditional Sunday flower market.
The world-famous Béziers Feria takes place in August
each year. This is a four to five day carnival which reflects
the life of Catalonia - with a mixture of French and Spanish
traditions - including bullfighting in the Béziers
Bullring. Street parties and a mardi gras atmosphere help
make a unique experience and one not to be missed. |

Montpellier
is the principal city of the region, with the seat of local
government housed in an impressive new building. The city
has the right mix of old and new. The old city contrasts with
the new shopping centres of the Triangle and Polygone. The
city is also well known for the outstanding new architecture
of the Antigone, which reaches from the Place de Opéra
- Comédie to the Regional building by the river.
There are plenty of restaurants, cafés and bars - the
area surrounding the Opéra-Comedie being a favourite
when you want to watch the world go by. The restaurants of
the Antigone offer riverside views, whilst the many restaurants
in the old quarter offer excellent food and good value. |

Originally Phoenician, and then
an important Greek port, Cap d'Agde offers
a variety of leisure activities. The Office de Tourisme talk
of the 14 km of golden sandy beaches, each offering something
different. Windsurfing, banana boat rides, pedalos, paragliding
and all the normal seaside activities are available.
All the beaches are easy to reach, and each beach has it's
own parking facilities, and many also have small bars, cafés
and shops.
For those who seek more of the sun, there is the famous naturalist
complex, with accompanying beaches. They are claimed to be
the largest naturalist beaches in Europe and are extremely
popular during the hot summer months. |

The Canal du Midi, built
to link northern France with the south in the 17th century,
enters the Mediterranean at Sète.
The town is the largest fishing port on the Mediterranean
and this is reflected in the large collection of fishing
boats moored by the numerous quaysides.
There are many excursion boats that sail from Sète,
offering visitors the chance to explore this area of coastline.
There is also the opportunity to watch one of the many fetes
that take place during the year. Some of these have jousting
contests on the river, played out by local teams sailing
gondola type boats. Using lances and shields the object
is for one team's leader to knock his opponent off the bow
of the boat into the river.

The Languedoc town of Nîmes
still bears the mark of Rome, even taking its name from
the god of Spring - Nemausus. The Romans established a colony
here - Colonia Augusta Nemausus, at the time of Emperor
Augusta. It was considered one of the most beautiful towns
in the Roman Empire, and visited by most of the Roman Emperors.
It was reunited with Languedoc and then both were joined
with France in 1271. When in use, the arena at Nîmes
could hold up to 20,000 spectators. The amphitheatre, built
just before the Christian era, was turned into a fortress
around 5C, and later used to house people in a variety of
buildings. It was cleared in the 19C and is now used to
stage bullfights.

The crenellated ramparts
and towers of Carcassonne dominate the skyline as you approach.
The towered Cité, with its old houses piled haphazardly
along winding streets, offers a peep into the past.
Anyone visiting Carcassonne must take in a visit to the
nearby attraction of Les Aigles de la Cité. Less
than 1 km from the towered Cité, visitors can watch
daily displays where experienced handlers show off the talents
of some of the most majestic birds.
A variety of Eagles and Hawks are shown in their natural
habitat and whether you are a bird lover of not, the display
is well worth seeing.
